maa’s Jerry Merriman and Milton Anderson accepted a Proclamation Award from Mayor Mike Rawlings February 12, 2014. The award is given to firms that contribute to the Dallas economy and make an impact on the community. maa thanks the City of Dallas for working with us on these projects.
Jennifer Picquet-Reyes Promotion
Jennifer Picquet-Reyes, AIA, is a Team Leader at maa and was recently promoted to Associate. She has 13 years of project experience in a wide variety of sectors which include new construction, adaptive re-use and renovation, as well as project management experience with LEED certification. As a team leader, Jennifer collaborates with clients and consultants to coordinate all phases.
Ryan Schutt Promotion
Ryan Schutt, RA, is celebrating the completion of his ARE exams and becoming an Associate at maa. Ryan’s has experience in all project phases and spends most of his time contributing to design packages and visualization for clients and design development with the maa team.
Julianna Turner License Announcement
Merriman Associates/Architects, Inc. is proud to announce Julianna Turner has successfully completed her registration exams and is now a licensed architect. Julianna became a USBC LEED Accredited Professional in May 2008 and this October 25th, she will celebrate the completion of her second year with maa. Julianna has several years of experience in a variety of project types including corporate, hospitality, industrial, multi-family, historical restoration and tenant finish-outs. She has experience in all phases of design from programming and schematic design to construction administration. Julianna has been a large contributor toward the new Hatfield and Company corporate office and warehouse, which includes spatial layouts, client and consultant correspondence and construction documents. Other projects include Bell Helicopter Building 26 renovation, Medifast locations, Ilume Park and the Downtown Grand Prairie Revitalization.

May 16, 2012, Preservation Dallas held their 13th Annual Preservation Achievement Awards. The Achievement Awards acknowledged groups and individuals that contribute to the development of historical buildings in Dallas. Merriman Associates/Architects, Inc. was the recipient of a Preservation Dallas Achievement Award for 500 South Ervay as an Unrealized Project. maa is responsible for the historical renovation and architectural services on this project.

TEXO honored maa with the 2012 Distinguished Building Award for our interior design services on the Dallas Petroleum Club.
Golden Trowel Award 2008
This award was created in 1989 by the United Masonry Contractors Association to recognize and encourage excellence in all phases of masonry construction. The Golden Trowel Award is given annually to an architect and masonry contractor, which of whom has demonstrated excellence in their joint efforts in executing a masonry project. Merriman Associates/Architects was awarded the 2008 Golden Trowel Award for the Brownstones at Town Square project. This project is located within the New Town Center at Southlake, Texas and includes luxury townhomes centered around the adjacent urban park and retail activities.
21 Rio Groundbreaking
21 Rio is a high-density housing project at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. This twenty one story tower will provide much needed housing for students and professors at the University. In 2008 the maa team visited the site for a groundbreaking ceremony which marked the first day of construction for this very special project.
Associated Builders & Contractors Excellence in Construction 2007
Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is an organization of diverse companies that work together to cultivate the construction industry through business and personal development. Each year ABC recognizes and promotes the outstanding projects built by ABC member both locally and nationally. The maa team was recognized in 2007 for their dedicated work on the Mosaic project in Downtown Dallas, Texas.
Topping Out 2008
Topping Out 2008 signifies a coming together of the building industry in more ways than one. Awards are handed out not on the basis of individual achievement but rather in honor of the collective accomplishments of the entire team responsible for the project’s success. Industry leaders from all aspects of the building profession honored Merriman Associates/Architects, Inc. and the entire Mosaic construction team with the award for outstanding build environments in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The Mosaic was one of the 10 top projects selected for this award.
Continental Building earns LEED Gold
maa converted the existing 11 story office building into a residential and retail development. The Continental Building is located in the Southeast section of downtown Dallas and is part of the historical district. This “H” shaped building is ideal for residential apartment unit designs and layouts. The first floor is leasing and fitness space for the tenants and has a covered move in loading dock. Floors two through 11 are designed for 199 apartment units with multiple unit types. The fourth floor units have large covered balconies that wrap the full exterior of the building. The 11th floor consists of penthouse apartment units with exterior roof decks and contains the amenity room with outdoor lounge and deck. Parking for tenants is provided in the existing below grade parking garage. This building is part of the Mercantile complex and has direct view and access to the new Main Street Garden Park across the street. The building is eligible for inclusion in the National Register by the U. S. Park Department. The Continental is downtown Dallas’ first LEED Gold Certified residential project.

Texas Downtown Association – Best Adaptive Reuse Award 2008
The Mosaic Building was awarded the 2008 Adaptive Reuse Award for the conversion of the existing and underutilized buildings into new uses such as residential and live/work spaces while still retaining the buildings original features. The objective of the Texas Downtown Association President’s Award is to recognize and honor the people and projects that have achieved excellence in Texas downtowns, education the public about the importance of quality projects and set a standard of excellence for downtown revitalization and preservation.
Preservation Dallas Achievement Award 2008
Preservation Dallas has recognized Merriman Associates/Architects, Inc. with the 2008 Achievement Award for the Gulf States Building (Third Rail Lofts) located at the corner of Main Street and Akard Street in Downtown Dallas. The preserved building was restored to high-rise residence units with below grade parking. During the renovation, Federal Historical Standard guidelines were met with the façade, interior public areas, ground floor entrances and the replacement of all windows of the Gulf States Building.
State Historic Preservation Officer’s Citation of Merit 2008
Oklahoma Historical Society- maa was awarded the 2008 State Historic Preservation Officer’s Citation of Merit for the rehabilitation of the historic Fidelity Bank Building. The 18 story vintage curtain-wall bank building was renovated into the Park Harvey Residence, offering Oklahoma City residents 174 units ranging from 580 to 1000 SF. This award is presented annual to firms that have made an important contribution to the preservation of Oklahoma’s heritage.
Every December maa kicks of the holiday season with the Gingertown Build Event at NorthPark. Gingertown benefits the Children's Craniofacial Fund.
Form Follows Fitness

maa has an annual Halloween contest were employees are invited to dress up for the day. Employees head out during lunch to show off their costumes downtown and in the afternoon a panel of judges vote on the best costume for prizes and awards. The day is full of bizarre antics and fun.
Every year the maa employees enjoy a long lunch break to the State Fair of Texas. Visiting Big Tex, Car Shows and screaming on the rides are all part of the day, not to mention all the food they can handle.
Ronald McDonald House
maa employees gathered early to serve breakfast to the families of Ronald McDonald House. The families shared their meal and personal stories with our volunteers. It was a truly amazing experience and we hope Ronald McDonald House will have us back again!
The Salvation Army Service Center in Dallas provides assistance to those in need in time of emergency (such as New Orleans) and Christmas. Over 40,000 children are provided for each year during the Christmas Holidays at this center. Volunteer services allow the center to operate and maa staff donates hundreds of hours each year to this center. The Salvation Army staff is dedicated and compassionate and it is rewarding for all our staff who participate.
Lone Star Park
maa takes a company trip to Lone Star Park Horse Track in Grand Prairie for an evening out. Employees and dates are treated to a chartered bus ride to the Track and dinner buffet in a Box Suite with great view of the track and races. Whether betting on the races or just simply enjoying them the evening is full of excitement.
maa participates in the annual CANstruction exhibit at North Park Mall. This worthy event is sponsored by the Society of Design Administration (SDA) an affiliate of the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (D/AIA) and benefits the North Texas Food Bank. Local architecture firms compete to create the best sculptures made solely out of canned and dry goods. At the end of the competition all food items are donated to the North Texas Food Bank. Last year alone, 50,000 pounds of food, which provided 39,000 meals, were donated through CANstruction.
Furniture 4 Kids
Each year maa participates in the Furniture 4 Kids event. maa partners with other firms in the design community to help raise money for local charities nationwide. Each firm receives a child size table and chairs to creatively design and decorate. The one of a kind sets are then auctioned off, with all proceeds going to The Mavs Foundation. Last year the event raised more than $25,000.
Jerry Merriman, AIA, is President and Founder of Merriman Associates/Architects, Inc. (maa). Jerry has over 35 years of experience with over 300 municipalities nationwide, and numerous countries internationally. He maintains and active role on maa projects, which is a reflection of his profound enthusiasm for the firm. Jerry’s hands-on approach and desire to find the most creative and unique solutions for each individual client, is revealed in the quality and reputation of the firms designs. The guidance he provides the firm is leading maa to reaching its goal of national and international recognition for excellence. He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and active in the American Institute of Architects, the University of Oklahoma Board of Visitors, Preservation Dallas Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of Downtown Dallas.
Milton Anderson, AIA, is Vice President and Director of Design for maa. Milton’s planning, master planning and architectural design experience ranges from High Rise office buildings and Historic Renovations to Healthcare and Hospitality projects. In his role as Director of Design, Milton continues to design as well as direct and coordinate a very talented staff. Together they create innovative, cost effective, attractive and efficient solutions that match each client’s needs and expectations. Milton has over 20 years of experience and is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. He is active in the Texas Society of Architects and American Institute of Architects.
David Masters, AIA, has more than 25 years of experience in architecture working on a variety of project types including; hotel, multi-family, historical restoration, healthcare, shell office, tenant finish-out, banking, educational, religious and industrial projects for corporate clients as well as developers. As a Principal and Director of Architecture, Mr. Masters oversees all projects in the office to assure the clients receive a quality product on time and in budget. David has a Bachelor of Architecture from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
Gale has over 14 years of experience with a wide range of project types. Her role as Director of Interior Design involves project management, client and consultant coordination, budget creation, proposal coordination, and management and mentorship of the maa Interior Design team. Gale also has extensive experience selecting and approving materials; reviewing and approving FF&E specifications, finish selections and finish schedules; and reviewing and approving submittals, details, and requests for information. Gale brings extensive knowledge of domestic and international design trends and hands-on construction experience, giving her a keen insight of clients’ needs and construction means and methods.
Brett is a third–generation small business owner in the design and construction industry and understands the complexities of the design and delivery process. He manages mpa’s business development and is integrally involved in design, production, and project delivery. Previously, Brett was a partner with Sentient Architecture in Austin, and an Associate Principal at Merriman Associates/Architects in Dallas. His experience includes a variety of projects types ranging from $1 million to $50 million in construction costs. He has worked closely with local, national, and international clients, including Trammell Crow, Greystar Development, Penske, Select Energy Services, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, InterContinental Hotels Group, and Allobjekt of Germany. His experience with various project types, budgets, and clients provides a wide base of knowledge in the architecture and construction industry.
Steve Schmitt is the Director of the Charlotte, North Carolina office of maa. Steve has extensive Design and Project Management experience with Industrial, Office, Resort/Recreational, Healthcare, Retail, and Land Planning projects. In addition to a broad range of architectural experience, Steve also has hands-on experience in construction and field supervision. As the Director of the Charlotte office, Steve is responsible for the management of all phases of work. He has a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech University.
Aimee Sanborn, principal and team leader at maa, is involved in project development from schematic design through construction administration. Aimee has special interest in multi-residential/mixed use high-rise developments and the application of sustainable design in a variety of project types. Aimee holds a Master of Architecture degree from The University of South Florida.
Adam Jones is a principal and team leader at maa. His project experience ranges adaptive reuse, historic preservation, multi-family, hospitality, educational, healthcare, religious, office, retail, military, and sport facilities throughout the United States. His management of these projects include cost estimating, preparation of due diligence reports, creation and coordination of construction documents and administrative to closeout client relations. Adam has a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oklahoma.
Jennifer Picquet-Reyes is a principal and team leader at maa. She collaborates with clients and consultants to coordinate all parts and phases of a project, from the early stages of programming, planning and schematic design through construction documents, construction administration and project closeout. Jennifer delivers a thorough, well designed and sustainable building. Her experience includes new construction, adaptive re-use, renovation, LEED certification and project management. Jennifer is a registered architect in the states of New York and Texas, is LEED AP BD+C accredited and holds a Master of Architecture degree from Texas Tech University.
Justin McCarthy, LEED AP, is a principal and team leader at maa who works closely with clients and consultants to coordinate all aspects of projects, from the early stages of programming, planning and schematic design, through construction and project closeout. Justin has experience in project management and design across multiple industries, including sports, healthcare, retail, and corporate architecture, As a LEED certified architect, he specializes in helping clients design sustainable, cost-efficient buildings designed to meet the needs of each client. Justin holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Iowa State University.
John Carruth has been an integral part of the maa team since graduating in 2004 from the University of Oklahoma. As a principal and maa's Director of 3D Visualization, John's leadership has been critical to the development and advancement of maa’s architecture, interior architecture, marketing, and graphic finesse since joining the firm. John stays active in the local architecture community and was nominated for and completed the Emerging Leaders program at the Dallas Chapter of the AIA. John not only does the work, but provides a positive learning experience for other team members and clients through each process every day. He directs the maa 3D Visualization studio and is responsible for keeping the firm on the cutting edge of 3D technology and for teaching and sharing the skills with co-workers and clients.
Ryan Schutt has experience in a variety of project types from conceptual design packages through construction administration. As an associate with maa, Ryan has been a part of numerous projects within the firm. His experience includes hospitality, corporate, retail, educational, multi family, and mixed use developments. His role in each of these projects is focused on the efforts to ensure the initial client’s goals and concepts are carried through the entire process of design and delivered as a complete product. Ryan has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design from Texas A&M University and a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington.
Julianna has experience in a variety of project and building types, including corporate, hospitality, industrial, multi-family, historical restoration and tenant finish outs. She has experience in all phases of design—from existing condition assessment, programming, and schematic design through construction administration for both new construction and renovation projects. Julianna participated in the 2013 Emerging Leaders Program developed by the Dallas chapter of the AIA. She joined colleagues within the design profession for monthly meetings to discuss leadership and professional relationship skills. Julianna has a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University. She is a Registered Architect in the State of Texas and is a LEED® Accredited Professional.
Patrick's experience as project architect and project manager includes hospitality, multi-family, office, educational, sports facilities, and residential projects. Patrick has a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oklahoma and is licensed in Texas, Oklahoma and Florida.
Fred Martinez has experience in a variety of project types from planning through construction administration. Project types include educational, health care, religious, mixed use, public works, and corporate. Fred has a Bachelor of Architecture from Texas Tech University is a registered Architect and is LEED® Accredited.
Sydney McStravick is the Director of Marketing at maa. She is involved in all aspects of maa’s marketing efforts including, creating and designing marketing collateral, team building, proposal writing and execution, and research on new areas of service and industries. Sydney also helps strategize and create presentations for new client interviews and shortlist opportunities. She has Bachelors of Business Administration degrees in Marketing and Management from the University of Oklahoma.
