Square Feet: 1,500,000

Opened: December 2020

Standing at 52 stories and totaling approximately 1.5 million square feet, First National Bank Tower, now known as The National, is one of the most challenging and largest adaptive reuse projects in Texas. The historic renovation included the careful preservation of 17,555 hand-cut exterior marble panels that were sourced from the same quarry as the marble used for the Parthenon. When it was completed in 1965, the building was the tallest west of the Mississippi River and was intended to be First National Bank’s brick-and-mortar legacy. When Todd Interests took on the preservation project, the tower had been dark for a decade.

As of its completion in 2020, The National is anchored by the first Thompson Hotel in Texas with the Thompson Dallas, a 219-key hotel opened in November 2020. The former finance offices now transformed into hotel rooms are sleek but welcoming. The main banking lobby was transformed into a 14,000-square-foot ballroom sized for grand affairs (or social distancing) with an additional 2,000-square-foot mezzanine space. Amenities include stunning skyline views from the two-acre, 9th floor pool deck, luxury spa opening January 2020, and state-of-the-art fitness center. Thompson Dallas features two restaurants: Nine at The National, an airy, beautiful spot serving breakfast and lunch, and a tenth-floor restaurant and rooftop bar concept called Catbird.
